American economic history is *Paul Clemens *of the History Department at

Rutgers University, New Brunswick. His article, "The Consumer Culture
of the Middle Atlantic, 1760-1820," which appeared in the October 2005
issue of the /William and Mary Quarterly,/ is a deeply nuanced study of
consumer choice and the incremental, but transformative, nature of
material culture and economy in a wide swath of the early republic.
