Land Policy votes by Indiana and Mississippi representatives.

From the office whiteboard

Turner versus ethnic community models (also trans-nationalism)
The midwestern clash of cultures issue?
Adams and Fletcher embody traits?

Some conclusions
slavery not inevitable
latitude not destiny -- N+S in both
once decided, slavery shifted streams
adaptation required and possible
birthplace is not destiny -- important but not formulaic

linkage questions
assimilation [one might look at the literature on acculturation as mentioned in Axtell]
ethnic identity
is the family the organic root of the social order?
multiple spheres of life -- the transactional/network view
conflict as the root of ethnic identification -- but how in the south? [African]
small changes in circumstances could have dramatic effects on character and personality

life on the margins: (1) absorption, (2) conscious separatism (a la Bob JOnes)
if both 1 and 2 true:
what conditions would drive individuals in one direction or another?
where there other constraints (ie slavery's legality) that were also operational?
what about economic opportunities()
(a) Availability
(b) inclination to seize opportunities
